Whether you’re excited to learn how to take travel photos as a couple to inspire others on Instagram and Pinterest, or simply want to create great photos for your private albums, you’ve come to the right place. I’m here to share tips and tricks Stefan and I have picked up during our travels, helping us take beautiful travel pictures as a couple while traveling without needing a professional photographer.
So, let’s dive in!
Get The Necessary Equipment
When we first started we tried asking passersby to take our photos but we realized soon that doesn’t really work. First of all, there aren’t many people walking around when we take our photos (more about that later), and secondly, in 80% of the cases, the photo will not look how you imagined it. Also, you may feel a bit embarrassed to pose in front of strangers, so there is that too.
So, we did a little bit of research and we realized that having a tripod is a must if you want to take travel photos as a couple, and it makes the whole process soo much easier. I am not advising you to invest in some badass tripod that costs a fortune, but a simple and cheap tripod like this one will work just fine.
This tripod is the one we are using now, as we decided to invest a bit more into our equipment, and we are beyond satisfied with it so I highly recommend it.
The other thing you will need is a Bluetooth camera shooter. You can also purchase a cheap one like this as there is no reason to invest more than it is necessary, especially in the beginning.
And of course, you will need some type of camera to shoot photos with, right? Well, we started with our phones. As simple as that. After some time we decided to invest in a more professional camera.
This camera is the one we now use and we love it so far! It takes perfect couple photos and we are really satisfied with it. We also recently got a starter drone but we are still learning our way around it, so I will write more about our drone experience in the future.
When Learning How To Take Travel Photos As A Couple Start Small
Learning how to take couple pictures by yourself is not just about the location (especially when you are just starting). You don’t have to spend a fortune to visit Bali just for the sake of amazing photos (although you should visit Bali anyways). Seek out charming streets in the towns nearby, stunning landscapes, and iconic landmarks that you think will work as a nice background for your photos.
The trick is to make the location part of your story and it is ok to start small so you can test things out. Embrace props that add personality – maybe it’s a cup of local coffee, a map, or a cute hat. And don’t forget the power of close-up shots; they beautifully showcase the emotions you two share.
The Best Time Of Day To Shoot Your Photos
What we do is we get up pretty early in the morning (about 6am), go to the location, prepare our equipment and start shooting slowly without any rush. This also helps a lot when you don’t feel comfortable shooting when people are around. But the main reason is that it is quiet and not crowded at all, which is great for your photos, as you will not have to deal with a bunch of people in the background.
This is especially important when shooting in tourist locations that are full of people, as there is no way you will be able to shoot photos in the middle of the day and have good results if you don’t get up early.
Practice Poses At Home
Now, let’s dive into the how to actually take travel photos as a couple. It’s all about keeping it natural and genuine. Forget forced smiles and focus on the real interactions between you two. Look at each other, laugh, kiss or hold hands as these moments capture your unique connection. However, you should have a few “go-to poses” that you practiced and know that look good.
This is one of our “go-to poses” and we use it frequently. You should be careful not to overuse one pose though, so keep that in mind when planning your poses. Looking on Pinterest for inspiration is a great way to start planning. Don’t hesitate to play around with angles and perspectives to find what suits you best.
Edit Your Photos Using Lightroom Presets
Let’s talk about a game-changer in the world of photo editing: Lightroom presets. If you’re wondering what they are, well, think of them as magical filters that transform your photos with just a click. Using presets will give your images a consistent and cohesive look, making your Instagram feed more visually appealing and engaging.
Did you ever notice how all the Instagram photos from one profile have a similar vibe? – Well, that’s the power of presets. Plus, they save you a lot of editing time, which means more moments for creating content or simply enjoying life. So, using Lightroom presets is like having a secret weapon for a stunning, uniform feed that makes your profile stand out in the crowd.
We use our Travel Couple Lightroom Presets for almost all of our travel photos. Presets from this set give a unique charm to your photos in just one click, and you have 10 different presets to choose from, and you can use it on both mobile and desktop. You can even play with the adjustments to make additional changes if needed until you are completely satisfied with the results.
But here’s the best part: you don’t need to be a tech wizard to use presets. With a quick download, you can apply them to your photos in a few clicks. Each preset is like a unique recipe for your photos, adjusting things like colors, tones, and contrast to fit a specific style.
No matter how well you learn how to take couple photos while travelling, without presets there isn’t that “professional” vibe you feel when you are looking at photos edited using Lightroom presets, so I highly recommend this step!
