Back in the Middle Ages, Kotor was important thanks to its prime spot on major trade routes. The city walls you see today weren’t just for show, they were built to keep out any unwanted visitors.

These walls still stand tall, and honestly, the views from the top are absolutely worth the climb. In the 15th century, Kotor came under Venetian rule, which left a serious mark on the town. Wander through the Old Town, and you’ll spot Venetian-style buildings, churches, and charming squares around every corner.

Kotor is a beautiful coastal town with something for everyone. One of the first things to do in Kotor, Montenegro is to explore the Old Town on one of the many walking tours. I went on a walking tour that included wine and food tasting, and it was fantastic, so I highly recommend it!

After taking in the history, it’s time to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the town. Explore The Old Town

I love the look and feel of the narrow streets of old towns in Europe, and I was really excited to explore the one in Kotor! Walking through the Old Town in Kotor, Montenegro, is like going back in time!

Wander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with old buildings and discover something interesting at every turn. For example, the Kotor Clock Tower – one of the most iconic landmarks in Kotor, is located opposite the main gate, so it is a perfect place to start your walking tour.

I definitely recommend taking a walking tour of the Old Town, either on your own or take a tour with a local guide.

The City Clock Tower is located in the main City Square of Arms. The City Clock Tower stands as a symbol of Kotor, much like the clock towers found in many other seaside towns in Montenegro.

The tower was built in 1602, by order of the Venetian governor named Antonio Grimaldi. The clock tower is constructed of massive stone blocks, and on the third floor, there are two large clocks on each side. The clock bell can be heard every 30 minutes.

The interesting thing is that if it’s 10 o’clock in the morning, the clock will strike 10 times; if it’s 10:30, the clock will strike only once. After the earthquake of 1979, the tower became slightly tilted.

At the base of the tower, there is an old clock shop owned by the Homen family, who moved to Kotor in the 19th century. Their generations still sell clocks and take care of the mechanism of the old Kotor clock (the clock mechanism can be seen from the Homen family shop) to ensure that the old clock never stops ticking.

After the Clock tower, you should stop by the Pima Palace, which showcases a blend of Baroque and Renaissance styles, making it a beautiful landmark in the Old Town of Kotor.

The palace is located across from the Buća Palace, on a small town square called Trg od Brašna (The Flour Square). Trg od Brašna got its name because only flour used to be sold there in the past.

The Pima palace belonged to the noble Pima family and was built in the 17th century. It is one of the luckiest palaces in Kotor, as it has never been destroyed in earthquakes, and still retains its original appearance from more than 300 years ago.

The palace has two floors, stone columns, and a balcony with a 250-year-old metal railing, and it simply looks amazing. Don’t forget to snap a few photos to capture the beauty of this historic landmark!

As you stroll through the Old Town, you’ll see squares filled with cute cafes and small shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. There are also a lot of street performers and musicians in the Old Town, and they are pretty good, so it creates a nice atmosphere.

Take A Boat Tour To The Blue Cave

Taking a boat tour to the Blue Cave is definitely one of the best things to do in Kotor and was the highlight of my trip. You really have to try it! We had so much fun and the views were absolutely stunning. The water is crystal clear and the color is almost unbelievable. It honestly felt like we were somewhere tropical, kind of like Zanzibar.

The boat ride itself was relaxing. We were on a small speedboat with about ten people, and the whole tour lasted around three hours. The views of the bay along the way were beautiful, and we were so excited to finally reach the Blue Cave and jump in for a swim.

Here’s a fun fact for you: the monk seal, which was thought to be extinct, was spotted inside the Blue Cave back in 1985. That was actually one of just fourteen sightings of the monk seal in Montenegro between 1885 and 2010.

When we arrived, the boat stopped so we could swim inside the cave and enjoy the amazing surroundings.

Now, here’s a little secret not many people know. The main Blue Cave, the one where all the boats stop, looks amazing and has a pretty tall entrance. But during the summer months, it can get really crowded because several boats arrive at the same time.

To avoid the crowds, we decided to swim to a smaller cave about fifty meters to the right.

This smaller cave is much less busy, and honestly, the experience felt even more special. We had no idea how deep it was because it gets dark after about ten meters.

We kept swimming into the darkness, and it was a mix of excitement and a little bit of nervousness since you never know what might be lurking in the shadows. You can hear some sounds inside too, which I think were bats, giving the place a slightly spooky vibe.

The water in the lit parts was super clear, and you could see the sandy bottom with no rocks at all. Swimming there brought out my inner mermaid, minus the whole fish part.

Make sure to book your tour in advance because this is something you definitely don’t want to miss. I promise you’ll have an unforgettable experience!

Climb The San Giovanni Fortress For Amazing Views

The San Giovanni Fortress offers one of the most incredible views you’ll ever come across. Climbing up might seem a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, it is so worth it. When you finally reach the top, get ready to be blown away.

The view of Kotor Bay and the mountains around it is absolutely stunning. It’s a perfect place to take some amazing photos or just pause for a moment and admire the natural beauty.

The fortress sits 280 meters above sea level and is a popular spot for Game of Thrones fans since it looks a lot like Dubrovnik, where the last season was filmed. The walls stretch around the entire old town for about five kilometers.

To reach the top, you’ll climb exactly 1350 steps. It usually takes about an hour and a half, but that depends on how fast you go and how often you stop for photos. From up there, you can see Kotor shaped almost like a perfect triangle.

The Legend of a Kotor Fairy

Kotor is full of fascinating legends. One of my favorites is about a wise fairy named Alkima who is said to live in a cave high above the city. There is a cave called Vilinica in an area known as Pestingrad.

The story goes that when the first people arrived in what is now Kotor, they started building the city high on the cliffs above the water. One night, Alkima appeared to them and advised against building far from the sea where there is no water or salt.

She told them to build the city by the sea because the sea is life. The people listened and built the city starting from the walls near the water.

Today, near the Vilinica cave, you can see an unusual stone formation that looks like large doors. These are called the Fairy Doors. Legend says that at dawn, a fairy can be seen sitting there, waiting for the golden ship to sail into the bay.

It’s one of those stories that adds a little magic to an already amazing place.

Visit Our Lady Of The Rocks

Our Lady of the Rocks near Kotor is a truly special spot with an interesting story behind it. Legend has it that local fishermen discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary resting on a rock right in the middle of the bay.

To thank her for protection, they started throwing rocks into the water to build up the spot. This tradition carried on for centuries, and now the island has a lovely church and a small museum.

If you’re visiting Kotor, a trip to Our Lady of the Rocks is definitely worth it. It’s a calm and peaceful place with beautiful views of the bay and the mountains around it. You can take a boat from Kotor’s Old Town to get there, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Once you arrive, take some time to check out the church and museum and learn about the island’s history.

Inside the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, there’s a really cool tapestry made by Jacinta Kunić between 1803 and 1828 while waiting for her sailor husband. It’s made from all kinds of materials like Japanese silk, gold and silver threads, and even pearls.

The most amazing part? She used strands of her own hair to make the hair on the figures of the Virgin Mary and Christ. If you look closely, you can see the mix of dark and gray strands, showing how she aged while waiting for her husband for 25 years.

It’s a pretty touching story hidden in the artwork.
